Police arrest self-proclaimed godman who raped woman to ‘rid her of evil spirits’

A self-proclaimed godman and two of his associates have been accused of illegally confining and gangraping a girl for a number of days at his ashram. The ashram in query is Shamsi, which comes below the Ratua Police station in Malda district in West Bengal. The sufferer is a resident of Nadia.
She was invited to remain within the ashram to ‘rid her of the evil spirit that possessed her’. Police have nabbed three individuals within the wee hours of Thursday and the sufferer was despatched for medical examination on Friday.
Sources mentioned that Bacchu Giri, chief of the ashram, visited Kamakhya temple for the annual honest with two of his associates Shankar and Dhanai. The accuesed met the lady on the honest 5 days in the past.
Some religion healer in her village had reportedly advised her that she was ‘possessed by a spirit’. He reportedly was unable to ‘remedy’ her and requested her to proceed to Kamakhya to discover a remedy. She met the accused on the honest who assured her that their guru has cured such circumstances up to now and requested her to accompany them again to the ashram. As soon as they they reached Shamsi they requested her to remain again on the ashram for a couple of days to get cured.
The lady was then confined to the ashram for a number of days and she or he alleges that she was tortured and gangraped within the title of a ‘remedy’.
The lady someway managed to flee the ashram. As soon as out she sought the assistance of locals and approached the Shamsi police outpost along with her grievance. Based mostly on her grievance police raided the ashram and arrested all three accused. Police mentioned that after the medical checks preparations can be made to ship her again to her house in Nadia.
Chanchal Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sajalkanti Biswas mentioned that police have sealed the ashram in query and ordered an inquiry. It’s being ascertained if the accused have dedicated such crimes up to now too.
